** Date of newspaper is not always the date of the incident - this was a weekly, and stories were written, set, and the printing was done after the facts were typeset, often days later.

Chico Weekly Enterprise, Friday Evening, May 23, 1890, pg 2, col 2: Death of Judge Granger. A Sudden Call to one of Butte’s Oldest Citizens. The citizens of this section were taken by surprise last night when a telegram arrived announcing the death of Judge L.C. Granger, at his home in Oroville. It was not known that he had been sick or complaining, which made the announcement all the more startling. He was somewhat unwell during the past week, but was at his post in the Land Office, in Marysville up to Saturday night, when he left to go up to him home in Oroville. Immediately on reaching Oroville he went to bed, when his trouble developed into acute pneumonia, which terminated in his death last night at six o’clock, at the age of 69 years.

Deceased was a gentleman of the old school, a lawyer by profession, and a thorough scholar. He has held several positions of honor and trust, and four years ago represented Butte county in the Assembly. Three years ago he was appointed Register of the Land Office at Marysville, and has conducted the duties of that position with that regularity and precision so characteristic of him. Deceased was a native of Ohio, and since ’51 has been a resident of Butte. The Enterprise extends sympathy to the widow and family in their sudden and great bereavement.
