Mrs. Verna Mae Bates Garner of Rt. 2, Gatesville, died Dec. 4 in Temple. She was 77.
Services were held Friday at Scott's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Broadway officiating. Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mrs. Garner was born May 5, 1914, in Lampasas County, daughter of the late George and Kitty Matchen. She was reared and attended school in Lampasas.
She married Mr. John Newell Bates November 15,1932, and they made their home in Spicewood before moving to Gatesville in 1950. He preceded her in death December 23,1981.
She was also preceded in death by a son, James Bates, in 1975.
On November 14, 1989, she married Herman Garner, and they made their home near Gatesville.
Mrs. Garner was a member of the Gatesville Senior Center and the Eastwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Herman Garner; a son, Dewayne Bates of Gatesville; a brother, John Henry Matchen of Lampasas; nine grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
Pallbearers were Donnie Wright, Mike Bates, Wayne Garner, Billy Bates, Steve Nichols and Gary Bates.
Honorary pallbearers were Joe Kring, Scotty Winter, Don Ruben, Billy Ray Jones and Keith Allison.
Memorials may be made to the Eastwood Baptist Church in Gatesville.
