One of the Oldest Engineers in Point of Service on Nor. Pac. R.R.
William H. Lawrence, one of the oldest engineers in point of service on the Northern Pacific system, passed away at a local hospital Sunday night at the age of 71 years. Mr. Lawrence came to Brainerd with his family about thirty years ago and has made his home here ever since.
Mr. Lawrence was born in Indiana and at the time the Civil War broke out was nineteen years old. He was among the first to enlist from Indiana when Lincoln issued his call for volunteers. He enlisted as a private under Capt. Gilbert H. Neeland, in company E., 4th Regiment Indiana Calvary volunteers on January 20th, 1863, and served with distinction until he was discharged on July 23, 1865. He was married in Michigan City, Indiana, November 2, 1868. After a number of years of faithful service in the employ of the Michigan Central railway he was made yardmaster at Michigan City. Since coming to Brainerd he has been in the constant employ of the Northern Pacific and was one of the best engineers on the system.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman and Engineers of Duluth.
His wife and five of his ten children survive him. They are: Lillian E. Lawrence, Mrs. F. N. Johnson, Miss Marie F. Lawrence of Brainerd and H. R. Lawrence and A. J. Lawrence of Pasco, Wash. A brother, George Lawrence, and sister Mrs. Mary Omey live in Michigan City, Indiana.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from the Presbyterian church Rev. W. J. Lowrie, officiating, assisted by Rev. G. P. Sheridan.
