REV. CROUSE, RED OAK'S MOST ARDENT SPORTS FAN, DIES AFTER LENGTHY ILLNESS

Retired United Methodist minister Carl Crouse, 91, of Red Oak, died Saturday in Muscatine following an extended illness. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Mitchellville Cemetery, Mitchellville. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Red Oak United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Petrak officiating. Nelson-Boylan Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Born Aug. 6, 1894, in Marshall County, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs Edwin Crouse. He married Besse Pritchard in Mitchellville June 20, 1922. A graduate of Iowa State College, Ames, he began his ministry in 1931 after completing a conference course of study for ministers not going to seminary. Officially retiring in 1967, at the age of 72, he moved from Massena to Red Oak to become pastor of three country churches, Climas, Hawthorne and Stratton. In his 10 years at the three churches, he had missed one winter Sunday at one church because of a snowstorm He had planned to go but learned that the members figured the couldn't make it. Another Sunday was missed at another church when the furnace failed. But he had never missed being in the pulpit because of illness. Always liking sports, he played basketball during his high school days at Albion High School and his college days. Later, he did quite a bit of basketball officiating. But he became an avid follower of high school sports when he moved to Red Oak and eventually joined the team on the bus to out-of-town games. The Rev. Crouse will be remembered for his avid devotion to the youth and sports programs of Red Oak. He was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include two sons, Verl P. of Ames and Clark D. of Muscatine; daughter, Sara Beth McComas of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren.
