In 1860, he was a laborer living with his parents in Oliver Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Harrisburg September 12, 1862, as a private with Co. I, 6th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 27, 1862. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 21, 1864, as a private with Co. F, 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry (113th Pa), but died of disease at Fortress Monroe.
