This record was kept by Mary Merritt; Her father was George W. Merritt son of George Stewart Merritt and Jane Carden.

John Merritt immigrated to America from England in 1770, and landed in North Carolina. Served in the Revolutionary war, Married Elizabeth Moore and settled down in North Carolina, where he bought a large farm. He cultivated the farm until 1814 when he sold and moved in wagons to Ohio where he died in 1825.
They, John Merritt and Elizabeth had these children born to them, Charles, William, George and James.
George Stewart Merritt, third son of John Merritt was born in Stokes, District of North Carolina (Northwest Central) about 1800 and was reared on a back woods farm.

In 1818 he married Jane Carden of Tennessee. He moved the next year to Ohio. In 1825 he moved to Hendricks County (Central), Indiana where he spend the remainder of his life. He died in 1855. Most of his descendents still live there.
George W. Merritt was born in Ohio in 1821; He was three years old when he moved to Indiana with his parents. He grew up on a farm and at the age of twenty, became engaged in the nursery business and general farming, having at one time, the finest orchards in the state. His farm was 320 acres. This farm was later turned into a park, called Merritt Park, in Hendricks County, and every year, second Sunday in August, they hold a reunion in Washington township, in Hendricks County, Indiana. This has been going on for years and a lot of the Merritt's are there yet.
Armstead Merritt, with his wife and family came to Rushville, Missouri when Henderson Allen Merritt was nine years old. Armstead Merritt passed away October 18, 1868. His wife, Elizabeth Watson died Oct. 28, 1909
