First Lady of Missouri from 1965-1973. She was the wife of Governor Warren Eastman Hearnes. She is the only first Lady to date to serve in political office, serving as State Representative in the Missouri House from 1979-1988. In 1988, she became the first wife of a former Governor in Missouri to run for Governor of the state running against John Ashcroft. She was also the first woman to do so. Ashcroft was reelected with 64% of the vote, making this the biggest landslide in a Governor's race since the Civil War. She lost two more bids to return to the State House in 1990 and 1998 as well as one bid for the State Senate in in 1992. In 2005, she was awarded the Edwin P. Hubble Medal of Initiative, and she and Former Governor Hearnes endoesed Hillary Clinton for President in 2008.
