Al was a well known driver who started his racing in the Los Angeles area. He attempted qualifying for the Indianapolis 500, seven different times, making the race in four of those attempts with his best finish being 12th, in 1941.

Al was killed on his qualifying run at the Indiana state fairgrounds in his Palmer Special when he crashed through the guardrail and into a cement wall.

Al was buried on Friday, September 20, 1946.
