Sterling Chatfield enlisted as a Private in Company F of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry of Aug 28, 1864, for 3 years service, at age 30. He was mustered into Federal service on Sep 2, 1864, and promoted to Sergeant on the 28th of that month. Sterling was admitted to Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, on Aug 8, 1865 , and discharged from the service on August 29th.
