John Junior Showalter, 93, of Roanoke, Va., passed into eternity with Jesus Christ on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. Born of John Stein and Ida Alice Showalter on February 28, 1916, John J. was a long standing member and faithful deacon of Peters Creek Church of the Brethren in Roanoke, Va. John J. was the youngest of five siblings and was the last one surviving. His sibling's names beginning with the oldest were: Cleopatra, Dennis, Everett and Galen. John J. is survived by his niece, Margaret Hudgins; and numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews. He regarded Ruth Showalter, wife of his late brother, Galen, as a beloved sister. He retired from Norfolk and Western Railway after 39 years of service. John J. traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe with good friends. He also toured some countries in Asia and South America. He was very active and visited the sick and elderly until a few months prior to his passing. John J. enjoyed gardening and was an avid fan of watching tennis, especially Roger Federer. On a recent visit, his great-niece Rebecca Bullard, remembered, "John was always so much fun and ready for any adventure. I was amazed at his knowledge and ability. I will miss him very much." John J. wished to recognize Kelley Foust, of Roanoke, Va., as his god-son; and Drusilla Pasley, of Boones Mill, Va., as his dear friend. The viewing will be held at Oakey's North Chapel on Sunday, December 27, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2009, at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren, 5333 Cove Road, Roanoke, Va., with the Rev. Jack Lowe officiating. The interment will follow in Peters Creek Cemetery. Please send monetary donations in lieu of flowers or gifts to Amedisys Hospice, 1312 W. Main St., Salem, Va. 24153.
