Chester E. Adams, 83, chairman of the board and former president of the First National Bank and Trust Co. of Waynesboro, died at 2:30 am Sunday, May 1, in the Quincy United Methodist Home. He had been critically ill for the past six weeks. Formerly of 23 W. Third St., be and his wife had lived at the Quincy Home since October, 1977. He was born in Marion, Oct. 19, 1899, son of the late William and Nettie (Swope) Adams. Most of his life was lived in Waynesboro and be was a graduate of the Waynesboro High School with the class of 1918. Adams began his career in banking with the First National Bank in 1919 when he was employed as a bookkeeper. He served in various capacities in the bank and in 1934 was named secretary to the board of directors. The following year he assumed the position of cashier and in 1942 was elected vice president of the bank. He served the bank as president from 1946 until 1966 when he was elected as chairman of the board, a position he held until his death. Long active in civic affairs, Adams was currently serving as president of the board of Renfrew Park and Museum and as president of the board of the Alexander Hamilton Library. He was a member of the Waynesboro Borough Authority and had served as treasurer of the Waynesboro Community Concert Association since its founding in the 1930's. He chaired many local fund-raising drives and was active In the Waynesboro Area United Way and the Waynesboro Beneficial Fund Association. He was a member of the Waynesboro Welfare Board and had served on the Memorial Park Board. For a number of years he served on the board of directors of Landis Tool Co. and was a charter member of the board of the Mason-Dixon Council of Boy Scouts. He had also served as president of the Kittochtinny Historical Society and had served on the boards of the Waynesboro YMCA, the Waynesboro Chapter American Red Cross and the Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He had served on the administrative board of the church and for a number of years taught in the Sunday School and was a member of the choir. He was a past master and former trustee of Acacia Lodge No. 536, F & AM. He was also a member and past president of the Waynesboro Rotary Club. He was a member of the Harrisburg Consistory, the Zembo Temple Shrine, the BPO Elks and the Waynesboro Country Club. Temple Shrine, the BPO Elks and the Waynesboro Country Club. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Mary E (Benedict) Adams, he is survived by two daughters Mrs. Betty Funk and Miss Martha Adams, both of State College, and two grand­children. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Christ United Methodist Church in charge of the Rev. Carl Buterbaugh and the Rev. William Summerhill. Burial will be in Green Rill Cemetery There will be no viewing. However, the family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m today. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, the Quincy Methodist Home or to a charity of choice.
