Howard William "Pappy" Legore, 78, of Westminster, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at his home. He was the husband of Elsie (Hoff) Legore for 56 years.

Born April 3, 1923, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Lester Howard and Pauline (Newcomer) Legore.

He retired from Black and Decker Inc. in Hampstead after 15 years. He was a handyman for several widows in the community, and worked for Burrier-Queen Funeral Home in Winfield for 25 years. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, where he was caretaker of the lawn and cemetery, and also served as church treasurer for 30 years. He was a charter member and co-founder of Winfield Volunteer Fire Dept. and held various offices over the years and was active until July 2001. He was a scoutmaster for 16 years for Boy Scout Troop 733 in Winfield.

Surviving are three sons, Robert Legore of Hartford, Conn., Richard Legore of Woodbridge, Va. and Ronald Legore of Sykesville; five sisters, Alice Marshall of Davie, Fla., Catherine Heltibridle of Littlestown, Pa.,Gloria Noble and Dorothy Sanders, both of Gettysburg, Pa. and Betty Green of Westminster; two brothers, Donald Legore of Finksburg and Glenn "Gene" Legore ; six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Black, who died in 1988.

Following a funeral service with the Rev. Jennifer Brown of Salem United Methodist Church of Westminster officiating, burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park in Finksburg. A memorial service from Winfield and Community Volunteer Fire Co. will be held with the Rev. Fred Eckhart officiating.
