George Ernest Nichols

George Ernest Nichols, son of Genevieve Charter and William Wesley Nichols was born August 4, 1880 on a farm near Winterset in Madison County, Iowa and passed away at his home in Greenfield late Friday evening, February 12, 1960 at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 8 days.

While he was still a small boy his family moved from Madison County to a farm in Lee township, Adair county, where he received his schooling. When he was 17 years of age, his father died and "Ern" as he was affectionately known, took the place of his father in the home and was a great help to his mother in rearing his brothers and sisters.

On June 27, 1900 he was united in marriage to Olive Gertrude Silvethorne and they established their home on a farm in Grand River township. To this union was born one son, Roe.

Following the death of their son Roe in 1931, their daughter-in-law and two small grandsons made their home with Mr. And Mrs. Nichols and "Grand Dad", as he was affectionately called by them, loved his grandsons dearly and was both father and grandfather to them.

In 1933 the family moved to Greenfield where they have since made their home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother, his son Roe, and an infant great-granddaughter, Barbara Ann Nichols.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his devoted wife "Ollie", his daughter-in-law, Velma Nichols of Hanford, California; two grandsons, Arthur and Virgil Nichols of Greenfield, his granddaughter, Roberta, and two great-grandchildren, Roeline and Jimmie Nichols. His presence will be keenly missed in this close family circle.

In addition he is survived by two sisters, Inez (Mrs. Perry) Bigalow of Omaha, Nebraska; Nellie (Mrs. Jesse) Jones of Portland, Oregon; one brother, Carl W. Nichols of Bayard, Nebraska.
