Services were held Wed., Feb.10, 1937 for the last of the Civil War veterans of Pocahontas Co., William A. Marther, at the Methodist Church in Rolfe. He passed away at his home Sunday night at the age of ninety years. He was born to Sanford and Betsy Lepper Marther at De Witt, Ia. He was one of five brothers and seven sisters, all of whom preceded him in death. He was a private in Company H, regiment 8, Iowa Infantry. He married Hannah Jane Hutchinson in 1881 and had 2 children, Cora May (Mrs. Lew Howe) and Albert A. who died in infancy. Mrs. Howe was at his bedside at the last.

For reasons unknown, the surname was spelled several ways in Iowa. You will note father Sanford's surname as Marthar, of his three sons in Findagrave, one used the spelling "Marther", and the others "Mather"- which is the old, correct English spelling.

The 8th Iowa Infantry was organized at Davenport, Iowa and mustered into Federal service between August 31 and September 4, 1861.

The regiment was mustered out on April 20, 1866

Total enrollment was 1589. The regiment lost 4 officers and 98 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 4 officers and 170 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 276 fatalities. 228 were wounded.
