Gospel preacher listed in Preachers of Today, Vol. 1, 1952, 248. Brother Newell was born Aug. 9, 1923 in Kennett, Mo. He was baptized by M. F. Cottrell, Feb. 1939 in Anderson, Ind. He married Bernice Young of Ripley, Miss. They have two daughters, Vickie Newell who teaches at Goodpasture Christian School in Madison, Tenn. and Connie Newell who is a secretary to ministers at the Hendersonville church of Christ, Hendersonville, Tenn. Brother Newell began preaching near Parson, Tenn. while attending Freed-Hardeman College. He served the following churches: Asher, Ok. 1943-45; Sapulpa, Ok. 1945-47; Overland church in St. Louis, Mo. 1947-52; South Parkway in Memphis, Tenn. 1952-55; Court Street in Flint, Mich. 1955-58; Central in Huntsville, Ala. 1958-64; Trinity Lane in Nashville, Tenn. 1964-70. He retired from full-time work in 1970 due to health problems, but served several churches in Sumner Co., Tenn. by appointment as health permitted. Brother Newell conducted gospel meetings in Oklahoma, Michigan, Tennessee, Missouri, and Mississippi. He conducted a 30-minute daily radio program while in Flint, Michigan, which was heard throughout the Upper Peninsula and in parts of Canada. He died Jan. 8, 1985 with liver cancer. He is buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery on Gallatin Road, Madison, Tenn. beside his parents, Loran and Betha Nunley Newell. Mrs. Newell and daughters worship at the Hendersonville church.
