Educated at Williams and Union Colleges. Proprietor and co-editor of "The Democracy" in Buffalo, NY in 1854. Worked for New York Tribune under Horace Greeley. Correspondent with Army of the Potomac in Civil War. Owned "Albany Evening Journal" in 1869. Went west and became involved in real estate. He is regarded as the founder of Tacoma, Washington.
