Third brother of Jane Austen. In the early 1780s he was adopted by Thomas and Catherine Knight, Austen family cousins, who were wealthy but childless. He went on the Grand Tour of Europe in 1786-88, went into business, and eventually he and his wife Elizabeth inherited their estate Godmersham Park, and he changed his name to Knight, in order to inherit fortunes from distant relatives.
