New London, NH - Carlton F. "Bud" Barton, 83, of Main Street, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at the New London Hospital. He was born in New London, NH on August 3, 1926 the son of Mason B. Barton and Almina C. (Knowlton) Barton Smith. As a young boy he attended school in Ardmore, PA and after the death of his father he came to New London and graduated from New London High School in 1944. From Jan. 1945 until Nov. 1945 he served in the US Army Air Corps. He received his B.A. Degree from Colgate University in 1949. Bud worked for Good Year Tire and Rubber Co., took a position with the Home Insurance Co. as a Field Rep. in Boston, MA, and then moved back to New London in 1953. There, from scratch, began the Carlton F. Barton Agency, an Insurance & Real Estate agency from 1954 until he sold the Insurance Agency to his son, Ben, in 1985. Bud was very active in the Town of New London. In the early days, Bud was seen for many years on the sidelines as coach of little league baseball, and youth basketball teams. He was a member of The First Baptist Church and had been a Sunday School Teacher, on the Stewardship Committee, the Executive Board, and Chairman of the Restoration Committee. He served as sewer commissioner, was the first school moderator for the Kearsarge School District, clerk of the New London Fire Dept., Forest Fire Warden, Director of the New London Hospital, Chair of the New London High School Building Committee, Friend of Tracy Memorial Library, Colby-Junior College Faculty from 1955-1956, was a Director of the New London Service Organization, the New London Outing Club, and was a member of the NL Boys Club. Bud was a member and Past Master of King Solomon's Lodge # 14 F & AM of Elkins, past Commander of the American Legion Post #40, and a member of Heidelberg Lodge #92 IOOF. He was a member of Lake Sunapee Country Club, a member and had served on the Bicentennial Committee of the New London Historical Society, and had been chairman of the Kearsarge Mountain Baseball League. Bud enjoyed golf and bocce. His first wife, Eleanor V. (Gay) Barton, died in 1982. His second wife, Marjorie R. (Powers) Barton died in April 2009. Members of his family surviving include four sons, Thomas M. Barton, MD and his fiance Anne, of York, ME; William B. Barton, MD and his wife Barbara, of Wolfeboro, NH, Benjamin K. Barton of New London, NH and his wife Deborah, Daniel G. Barton of Boxford, MA, and his wife Alison; 15 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Susan, Frawley, Peter, Elizabeth, Jenna, Emily, Samuel, Katherine, Jillian, Nathaniel, Jason, Alexander, Christopher, and Hillary; two sisters, Jane Pratt of Bradenton, FL and Mary Lue Belden of New London, NH and brother in law, Charles Belden; nieces, nephews, and cousins. A funeral service will be held on December 19th at 1:00 PM at The First Baptist Church of New London, NH. Burial will follow in Old Main Street Cemetery, New London, NH.
