From "Nathan Ellington family, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas", Wagon Wheels, Vol 2, No. 1, Spring, 1982:
"Thomas Nathan Ellington was born March 5, 1839 in Sevier County, Tennessee. In 1860 he married Martha Charlotte Metcalf of Chismville. He served in the Union Army and was wounded. He drew a pension after the war. He died on November 13, 1921."

[A few corrections: He was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee, and his gravestone says in 1838 - not 1839. His father-in-law, the ‘farmer at Chismville' was Anthony Martin Metcalf. A prominent hill in Franklin County just north of Logan county is named Metcalf hill. They were married February 27, 1859, probably in Chismville.]

T N Ellington received a patent for 80 acres, dated May 1, 1861. The land is in Franklin County north of Booneville, and near his father-in-law's property. By 1870 he has relocated to a farm in Reveille township near Magazine, Arkansas where he lived out the remainder of his life.

A grand-daughter wrote of him: "Charlotte Metcalf and Thomas Nathan Ellington - William; Columbus Mayfield; Mary; Laura; James; David; Cora; Samual; Ora. In Civil War; Northern Soldier. Wounded badly in right leg. He was always a cripple. Received pension from government."

It seems that he was a Rebel soldier before he was a Union soldier. He is on the roster of Company E, 35th Arkansas Infantry Regiment CSA. This Company was made up of men mainly from Franklin county, Arkansas.
"Thomas Ellington, private - Enlisted 25 Jun 1862 at Charleston, Franklin County, Arkansas. Furloughed sick 4 Mar 1863. Ht 6', eyes drk, hair drk, complx drk, farmer, age 24, born in Tennessee."

He then served with his brother Lewis in the Second Arkansas Infantry USA: He enrolled in Company B on 10 sep 1863 at Dardanelle, Arkansas at age 25. They both claimed birthplace of Claiborne County, Tenessee. "He started as a private, and was promoted to corporal. Pension app: awarded as an invalid in 1889. Died 13 Nov, 1921, Magazine. Pension went to widow."
