Ivan served in the U.S. Army during WWI in the 168th Infantry Regiment (Third Iowa) with his brother, Merritt Atwood. On 25 March 1922 he married Vera Ona Parsons in Des Moines, Iowa, they divorced. He then married Weltha (Erskin) Houck. No children were born in either marriage.
