Funeral services for James L. Mitchell, 81, of 815 ElwoOd will be conducted 11 a.rn., Friday from the Chaney Walters Funeral Home, Rev. Donald B. App officiating.
Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell, who for many years was active in educational and governmental affairs in Sterling, died Tuesday in a Sterling nursing home.
He was among the early members of the Northeastern Junior College Committee, appointed in 1943 to succeed C. Reeder Phillips,one of the original committee members and the first committee president, who resigned.
Mr. Mitchell served on the NJC committee until 1947.
He was also a member of the Logan County School Board and served on the Sterling City Council from 1945 to 1949.
Mr. Mitchell was born Aug. 20, 1897 in Ashland, Kan., the son of Sterling P. and Cora Mayes Mitchell. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from Aug. 15, 1918 until Feb. 25, 1918 and was stationed in Virginia and Maryland.
He was district supervisor for Sinclair Oil in New Mexico and later made his home in Colorado Springs and Denver before coming to Sterling in 1934 to operate the Sinclair Bulk Plant. In 1939, Mr. Mitchell established the Mitchell Pontiac Agency and operated the firm until it was sold in
1959. He then entered the insurance business with Mc Cluskey Agency and later worked for the Murphy In surance Agency until 1972. Mr. Mitchell married Mildred Foster in June 1927 in New Mexico. She preceded him in death and on June 11, 1961 he married Lucille Swedlund in Sterling.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, a former member of the First United Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, elected in 1952 and again in 1956.
He was a member of the Sterling American Legion Post No. 20, the Last Squad, Sterling Elks Lodge, Sterling Lodge No. 54 A.F. & A.M., and the Sterling Country Club where he participated in many golf tournaments.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucille Mitchell of Sterling; two sons, Dr. J. W. Mitchell of Greeley and Dr. Alan Swedlund of Deer field, Mass.; two daughters, Mrs. Janet Kauffman of Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. Elaine Frost of Arkansas City, Kan.; a brother, John T. Mitchell of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Nita Allderdice of Sun City, Ariz., and Mrs Corinne VanHayes of Anthony, Kan., and 11 grand children.
