Burling served as a Staff Sergeant& Ball Turret Gunner on B-17G (#42-31443), 532nd Bomber Squadron, 381st Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 29, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed in the fabrication of metal products and also as Single, without dependents.

Burling was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was shot down by German Fighters and crashed near Bielefeld, Germany while on a mission to Oscherleben, Germany. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
