Fred BOARD served with the Canadian Army (14th Battalion, Royal Montreal Regiment) in Europe during World War I. He saw extensive action in France with his unit and was gassed on two occasions.

He met and married Constance Lewyn in England. They returned to Canada together on the ship Minnedosa in 1919.
