Dean Joseph Hunt
March 1, 1919 - July 20, 2012

Service: Monday, July 23, Weaubleau First Baptist Church, under direction of Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home, Wheatland.

Mr. Hunt, 93, Weaubleau, died Friday at his home. He was born on a farm southeast of Weaubleau, the fourth son of Isaac Bradford and Clara Belle Sheriff Hunt.

He was converted at age 12 during a revival meeting at the Weaubleau Baptist Church with Bro. Weaver of Bolivar officiating. He attended school in Weaubleau and received a basketball scholarship to Warrensburg State College. His high school basketball team won first in the state. He also played baseball.

Before he earned a degree at Warrensburg State College, he returned to Weaubleau to open a service station business.

On Aug. 31, 1940, he married Zenith Darlene Allen of Weaubleau, and to this union two sons were born, Phillip Dean and Kenny Alan.

He joined the U.S. Navy in World War II in 1944, where he saw action in the Pacific Theatre as a gunner on Merchant Marine ships that hauled hundreds of troops. He was credited with gunning down a Japanese suicide plan that was headed for his ship, saving many lives. After returning from the service, he and his wife settled down in Independence.

He was ordained as a deacon at the Maywood Baptist Church in Independence in 1969. He worked at Ford Motor Plant, General Motors and Lake City Arsenal. He retired from Armco Steel as superintendent of plant protection.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Texas and Arizona. They decided to retire to Weaubleau where they moved their church membership to Weaubleau First Baptist Church. He served as a deacon until his health failed.

He also enjoyed gardening.

His son, Phillip Dean, preceded him in death.

His survivors include his wife, Darlene Hunt; a son, Kenny Hunt of Independence; five grandchildren, Jason Hunt, Clinton Hunt, Christopher Hunt, Phillip Dean Hunt and Travis Joyce, all of Independence; his sisters, Elizabeth Hart Loeffler of Weaubleau and Marge Blackwell of Hermitage.

The Rev. Scott Chance officiated with burial in Robinson Cemetery west of Weaubleau with military honors provided by Flemington AMVETS Post 114
