Thursday, Aug 19, 1920:

Eld. John M. Shulse, 90 years, 2 months and 14 days old, died at three o’clock Sunday morning, at his home one mile west of Lebanon, following a stroke of paralysis two weeks ago last Saturday.

Deceased was born in Nicholas county, Ky., June 1, 1830, and was first married on August 27, 1854, in Tippecanoe county, Indiana, to Jane Bowers, who died March 8, 1866. On November 14, 1867, he was married to Sarah M. Hawkins, of Boone county, who survives. The children surviving by the first marriage are W. L. Shulse, of Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. J. H. Stone, of Watseka, Ills. One daughter, Mrs. T. F. Allen, is deceased. By the second marriage Mrs. Goldsmith M. Hedges, of Terre Haute; Mrs. Josephine Hockersmith, at home; Joseph A. Shulse, of Washington Township; Harry Shulse, at home, and Benj. F. Shulse, of Vicksburg, Miss., survive. One daughter and one son by the second marriage are deceased.

Deceased emigrated with his parents from Kentucky to Missouri when he was three years of age. In 1836 the family moved to Boone county, Indiana, and settled near the Bethel church, north of Lebanon. Mr. Shulse has resided in Boone county since that time, and in the Bethel neighborhood until 1905, when he acquired the farm a mile west of Lebanon, from the Slayback heirs, and has lived since thereon. He is the last of a family of eleven children. For forty years he was quite active as a preacher in the Disciple Christian church, serving churches in Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. He was a member of the Central Christian church of this city, from which the funeral was conducted at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Homer Dale. Interment at Oak Hill cemetery.
