US Congressman. He served as a drummer boy in the War of 1812, and later studied medicine, graduating from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He established a medical practice in Halifax and surrounding counties in Virginia and served in the Virginia State Senate. Defeated in his first attempt at a run for Congress in 1846, he was successful two years later, and served as a Democrat from Virginia for two terms, from 1849 to 1853. After being defeated for renomination in 1852, he returned to his medical practice in Halifax County.
