COX'S CREEK GIRL KILLED IN ACCIDENT
A single vehicle accident near Culvertown claimed the life of a 17 year old Cox's Creek girl and injured a New Haven teenager early Saturday. Two other people in the car escaped injury. Rhonda Jean Mattingly, a senior at Nelson County Senior High School, was pronounced dead on arrival at Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown, according to Dr. Charles Spalding, Nelson County coroner. He said death was caused by head and neck injuries and possibly a skull fracture. According to Nelson County Police, the accident occurred about 1:15 a.m. when the car, driven by 19 year old Kimberly Metcalf of Culvertown, apparently edged off Culvers Lane. The car then went out of control and overturned, according to police. One passenger, Jerry Boone, 17 of New Haven, was taken to Louisville's Humana Hospital University and later transferred to Jewish Hospital, also in Louisville. The son of Joseph Gerald Boone, he was listed in satisfactory condition yesterday. Personnel with the Nelson County EMS said Boone suffered injuries to his hand and possibly other injuries. The fourth passenger, George Boone, 25, also of New Haven (but unrelated to Jerry), escaped injury. Miss Mattingly is survived by her mother, Linda Mattingly Smith, and stepfather, Jerry Smith of Harrison Fork Road; two brothers, Donnie Mattingly and Jerry T. Smith, Jr., both at home; three sisters, Sherry Heath of Shepherdsville and Susie and Sandy Mattingly, both at home; and two grandparents, J. W. Spalding of Bardstown and Mrs. Roby Mattingly of Samuels. Visitation at Mann & Greenwell Funeral Home began after 1 p.m. yesterday. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today (Monday) at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Shields, pastor of Cox's Creek Baptist Church, presiding. Burial will be in the St. Gregory Cemetery in Samuels. Pallbearers are Steve Jury, David Barnett, Buddy Pugh, Bonnie Pugh and Sonny Jackson.
