According to his granddaughter, Martha, Noah was accepted into the service during WWI even though he only had one lung. He was shipped overseas, but before seeing any action became ill with pneumonia.
He was in a hospital in Scotland. Martha says she has letters from the nurses at the hospital saying how hard they worked trying to save him but because of his limited lung capacity they were unable to do so.
The letter his wife, Carrie Lee, wrote to him telling him she was expecting a child was returned to her unopened. He never knew he was to be a father.
