Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 17th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on April 25, 1861. He served through his unit's three month enlistment, and was honorably mustered out on August 2, 1861.

He was then tabbed by his older brother, Major General George B. McClellan, to serve as his Aide-de-Camp. To that end he was commissioned and mustered in as a Captain, US Volunteers on August 26, 1861. After his brother was relived of command in November 1862, he served on the staffs of VI Corps commanders Major Generals John Sedgwick and Horatio G. Wright.

Mustered out on July 13, 1865 after the war was concluded, he was brevetted Major, US Volunteers on October 19, 1864, promoted to full Major on March 7, 1865, and was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, US Volunteers on April 9, 1865.

For many years he was part of the Coxe Brother's Mining and Railroad interest.
