Anton P. "Tony" Benda, age 92, of Sunrise Beach, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at his home. He was born March 29, 1917, in Franklin, Kansas, the son of the late Leo F. and Anna Kranker Benda. On February 23, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Gilson, who preceded him in death on January 25, 2007. He was employed as a department manager for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for 36 years until his retirement in March of 1979. Tony and Betty first came to the Lake of the Ozarks in the early 60's and became permanent residents of Sunrise Beach after their retirement. Tony was a member of the Shrine of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus; he was a charter member of both the American Legion Zack Wheat Post #624 in Sunrise Beach and the Osage Community Elks Lodge #2705 in Laurie. Tony was a Master Sgt. in the United States Army having served in WWII. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 8, at the Shrine of St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Edwin Cole officiating. Interment with full military honors followed in the St. Patrick Cemetery.
