The Civil War information was given to me verbally by his grandson (who is around 90). Alex was only 4 years old at the time, that means this info is incorrect. But, I will keep it here until I find out which Meredith it belongs to. Perhaps his brother, John Wesley Meredith, who was in the Civil War.

He served in the Civil War and his name is to appear on a memorial unveiled Memorial Day 2010 in Middlebourne, WV.

Monument honors Civil War soldiers

MIDDLEBOURNE - A ceremony dedicating a Civil War monument at the Tyler County Courthouse will be 2 p.m. Sunday.

The monument will honor those from Tyler County who fought in the Civil War, one of the bloodiest the country has known. Funds for the monument were donated by descendants of soldiers as well as local businesses and individuals from all over the United States interested in seeing a monument erected honoring Tyler County soldiers in the Civil War.

Plans include a Civil War re-enactment group, the firing of a cannon, and Fritz Klein portraying President Abraham Lincoln.

Speakers scheduled are: Mike Myer, executive editor of the Wheeling News Register; Roger Romine, state delegate; Charles Smith, Tyler County commissioner; Barry Harter, ancestor of Theopholis Harter; and Frances Tippins.

The Tyler Consolidated High School band will perform as will members representing Civil War re-enactment groups and veterans organizations.

The monument bears 173 names, including Medal of Honor recipients. The base of the black granite monument is 24-by-24-inches and 16-feet high and the spire is 6-feet-6. The names are engraved on the spire.

The front reads, "This monument has been dedicated in memory of Tyler County soldiers who participated in the War Between the States from 1861-1865. This war resulted in the birth of the great state of West Virginia".

According to a family history compiled by Catherine Rebecca Meredith written in 1949 and revised in 1957 and again in 1976:

It is said that Alexander's great grandparents are Thomas and Mary Parks Meredith of South Wales.

Alexander's grandfather was Davis Meredith Sr. (Meredythe), who was born in 1750 in Radnorshire, South Wales. He came to America when he was 26 years old and settled in Connecticut. He was a Revolutionary soldier from Connecticut. Shortly after this war, he migrated to London County, VA (is this today's Loudoun County?). The names of his first two wives are not known, but the first wife died childless.

Davis Sr. had two children by his 2nd wife: Hanna & New.

From VA, Davis Sr. migrated to Monogalia County, WV. His third wife was Nancy Pritchard, whom he called Ann. Davis Sr. and his wife settled in the Paw Paw District near Hoodsville. His farm was 37 acres. In his will, dated May 24, 1825, his wife is named as exectrix. His children are named in the following order:

Absolum
Hanna (his child by his 2nd wife)
Rebecca
Nelly
Rachel
Martha
Thomas
Eleanor
Job
Davis Jr.
William

(it is assumed that his son, New, by his 2nd wife, must have died prior to his father's will being written).

Alexander's father, Davis Meredith Jr., was born in 1815 at Hoodsville, Monongalia County, WV.

Davis Jr. married Nancy (known as Naomi) Snodgrass in Monongalia County by Rev. William Hawkins, Nov. 17, 1833. Naomi Snodgrass "was of pure Irish blood." Davis Jr. and Naomi lived in Monroe and Noble Counties, Ohio, before settling in WV. They moved to Tyler County, WV in 1860 on a farm known as the "Ingram Smith Farm," near Centerville, WV.

They had 11 children:

John Wesley, b. 1838, d. 1937
Absolum Pritchard, b. 1842, d. 1904
Frances Laverna, b. 1843, d. 1916
Thomas Pinckney, b. 1846, d. 1927
James Alva, b. 1850, d. 1935
Phebe Jane (Jennie), b. 1853, d. 1895
Emily, b. 1857, d. 1935
Alexander Alpheus, b. 1859, d. 1926
Martha, b. 1861, d. 1891
Newton, birth date unknown, was married, no children
Nancy, birth date unknown, was married and had 1 child

Alexander was united in marriage by D. A. McGinnis to Mary Ellen Taggart on April 12, 1885 in the home of D. A. McGinnis. The marriage license states the groom was 25 and the bride was 22 years of age. However, her birth certificate states she was born in 1858, which would have made her 26 years old.
