Suggested edit: Benjamin was a private in Co. D. 2nd U. S. Calvary, in 1860; promoted corporal April 13, 1861; was placed in charge of 13 men, and was on guard at the President's house for 6 days. Served with his company in Washington until Sept. 24, 1861, when he was discharged and ordered to report to Gov. Israel Washburne of Maine, to accept a commission as adjutant of the 1st Maine cavalry. Promoted to captain of Co. B, 1st Maine cavalry, and lieutenant- colonel and colonel by brevet by order of Gen. Sheridan March 13, 1865, for gallantry in the field June 24, 1864, at St. Mary's Church, Virginia, where he was wounded in the shoulder. Upon his return to duty he was placed in command of the cavalry depot of the Army of the Potomac, which position he held until he mustered out of the service, Aug. 9, 1865.
