mid 1850s. Politically,
Hadley was a Whig and later
joined the Republican Party.
He was not nearly as successful
in the business community as he
was stirring politics. He became
a member of the Ark. House of
Represenatives. He made a name
for himself in supporting
educational facilities for Ark.
Hadley became governor because of
a complex series of incidents. Lt.
Governor James Johnson was convinced
to resign his office and take the
vacated office of Ark. Sect. of State.
This left the Governorship to Hadley,
then the President Pro Tempore of
the Arkansas Senate.
At the end of Hadley's term, the
Clayton faction nominated
Elisha Baxter for the governorship.
Baxter became the nominal winner
over Joseph Brooks. A complex series
of politics initiated the infamous
conflice in the state called:
The Brooks-Baxter War.
Eventually he became the Registar
of the Little Rock, Ark. Land
office.
Next, he was made the Post Master
for Little Rock.
He eventually moved from Arkansas and
lived with his children in various
parts of the nation.
