Earl Milton Mason, 81, of Clinton and former native of Newport, AR, and retired Contract Administrator in the Procurement and Contracts Division of the Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Operations, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 18, 2006. Earl was born January 31, 1925 to James Francis Mason and Florence Edwards Mason. He attended schools in Bradford, Arkansas and graduated from Newport High School in 1942.

He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Hilda Borum Mason. They were married August 31, 1957 in Oliver Springs TN. Earl is also survived by his sister, Carolyn (David) Anderson of Lincoln, NE and brother, Gene (Cynthia) Mason of Little Rock, AR and several nieces & nephews.

Earl served three years in the United States Navy during World War II, including duty in the South Pacific. He graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas) with a BSE degree in 1950. He taught for a year in Newport, AR before joining the Atomic Energy Commission in Las Alamos, NM.

Earl began his federal service in 1951 as a security inspector with the former Atomic Energy Commission in Los Alamos, NM. In 1954 he transferred to the Security Division in Oak Ridge Operations. While with Security, he spent two months in Geneva, Switzerland as a member of the United States Delegation to the 1955 Geneva Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy. This entailed the "Swimming Pool" reactor constructed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and exhibited at the First International Conference. In 1955 he transferred to the research and development division where he began a 30-year tenure of procurement functions, including the negotiation and administration of research and development contracts and various other agreements. In 1972, he transferred to the present day procurement and contracts division.

Funeral services are Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at 8:00pm at Weatherford Mortuary with Rev. Garvan Walls and Rev. Keith Price officiating. Graveside services are Thursday at 11am at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with Rev. C. J. Holt officiating. The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Printing Ministries of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
