He is the son of John Irvin and his first wife Mary Anne Steele ( Dau of William Alexander Steele and Sarah Akers. He and brother Robert Steele Irvin went to TX after the Civil War. They served with my Great grandfather Benjamin Washington Chapman in TN 7th Cavalry under N B Forrest. B W Chapman married their half-sister Sarah; Sarah Fairfax Irvin was the first child of John Irvin by wife #2, Mary Ann Sangster.

Let me tell you that was a merry chase, finding "her", John's wife "Mary Ann S ". "She" was dead and buried in Appomattox Co, VA and still alive and having children in Haywood County TN in the next census!!

Wondering about Gramma Chapman's middle name of Fairfax and my grandmother's word that she was from the Fairfax and Lee family of VA.( who died in 1961). I was able to trace and document her line back to William Fairfax and wife Sarah Walker in Barbados in the 1700's. From their daughter Anne Fairfax, whose first husband was Lawrence Washington, (who owned and lived in Mt Vernon before George W. did!,) to her second husband George Lee. Thence George Lee and Anne Fairfax's son Lancelot and his marriage to Mary Bathurst Jones. They are parents of Sarah Fairfax Lee who married Robert Sangster. Their daughter Mary Ann Sangster is John Irvin's second wife names MARY ANN initial S! and mother of Gramma Chapman ( Sarah Fairfax Irvin) and of Thomas, Ida and Roberta Irvin )( half siblings of Dr Alexander Irvin). Sarah F Irvin married B W Chapman and their son B W Jr is my grandfather.

B W Chapman and wife Sarah F Irvin and her mother Mary Ann are interred in Forked Deer Cemetery, Eureka Methodist Church, Haywood Co TN,( where Irvin is misspelled on her stone as Irvan.)

The Irvin's go back to PA and are the first White family in Campbell Co VA as early as 1732.

The library in Ripley TN has a Civil War Diary by a lady that includes references to Dr Alexander Irvin and brother Bob ( who was postman at Curve TN before going to TX).
Anyway, I am still looking for Robert Steele Irvin's grave that I know is in TX and also Benjamin Washington Chapman Sr's father William Chapman who may have gone to TX with them.
