Son of Everett and Margret Lawhon, Mike was 21 years old. He received four distinguished awards posthumously in a special ceremony at Fort Harrison. The awards he received were the Bronze Star Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; the "V" Device for Heroism; Purple Heart; Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.

The awards were earned by PFC Lawhon in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in South Vietnam during the period of July and August, 1969. Mike attended Ball State University in Muncie, IN where he was a member of the Epsilon Omega Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was also the drummer in a band called Styx and Stones that played all over campus. As a member of Sigma Chi's Gold Star Honor Roll, he is the only member of the chapter at Ball State who was killed in battle. All honor to his name.
