State Loses 1,242nd Soldier in Combat
Washington (AP)- The Defense department reports that Army PFC. Charles E. Beals, son of Mr. and Mrs. Beals, Rt. 2, French Lick, In., has been killed in combat in Southeast Asia. He was the 1,242nd Hoosier serviceman reported killed in combat in the war.
Charles Beals Missing In Action.
Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Beals, Sr. have received word that their son, PFC Charles E. Beals was reported missing While on patrol in Vietnam on July 7.
Information from the office of the adjutant general reported Charles was " last seen while on combat operations when a hostile force was encountered ". It assured the parents a search was in progress and any additional information would be forwarded promptly.
Charles is a 1969 graduate of Springs Valley.
Vietnam Casuaity Given Postumous Honors
Four military awards were presented at Fort BenjaminHarrison Wednesday posthumously to SP 4 Charles Elbert Beals, French Lick, a fatality of the Vietnam War. Mr and Mrs. Clinton H. Beals of French Lick received the medals for their son who was officially declared dead in July, one year after he was reported missing in action.
The awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge, the bronze Star citation reads, "By direction of the President, the Bronze Star medal is awarded to Specialist Four Charles E. Beals, United States Army, who distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam during the period April 12 1970 to July 7, 1970.
The exemplary manner in which he performed has contributed significantly to success of the United States mission in 'Veitnam and reflects and the military servic.
The Orange countian had previously earned the National Defense Service Medal, Veitnam Service Medal, Veitnam Campaign, Sharpshooter Badge with Automatic Rifle Bar, and the Marksman Badge with Machine Gun and Rifle Bars.
The 22-year-old youth was employed at Cornwell Co. before entering military service. He was born at Union City and graduated from Springs Valley High School with the class of 1969.
Memorial services were held at Concord Church south of Paoli after his death was confirmed by the military in July.
Military honors were accorded by Fort Harrison.
