Governor of Maine. He studied law with his uncle in Readfield, Maine, passed the bar and became an attorney. While practicing law Hunton also operated a farm and served in the Maine Militia. A member of the National Republican (later Whig) party, he served on Maine's Executive Council in 1829. Later that year he ran successfully for Governor, and served from 1830 to 1831. His term was marked by efforts to create a state mental hospital, a project that was completed after he left office. After leaving the governorship following an unsuccessful reelection bid, Hunton returned to his law practice and farm, also serving in the Maine Senate from 1832 to 1833 and the Maine House of Representatives in 1834.
