"Mary Goss was married three times;
#1 William Davidson: married circa 1775 in Wilkes Barre, PA
#2 Lemuel Gibbons: married circa 1780 in Granville, MA
#3 Valentine Santee: married by March 1800 in Huntington, PA

Mary was the eighth of twelve children, and third daughter, born to Philip Goss IV and Mary Kendall. Her siblings: Sarah, Philip V, Experience, Comfort, Nathaniel, David, Solomon, Hannah, Ebenezer, Mercy, Abel and Levi.

Interestingly, Mary was born with a genetic condition known as polydactyly which means that she had an extra finger on each hand and an extra toe on each foot. Her son, William had the same condition which can be found in Mary's Kendall [maternal] ancestors and in Goss and Gibbons descendants to this day.

Mary's father moved the family to Wilkes Barre, PA by August, 1769. There she met and married William Davidson with whom she had a daughter, Mary, on August 20, 1775. William was killed [along with Mary's father, Philip Goss] by Indians on November 9, 1778. At this time Mary fled to safety in Granville, MA, to the home of her sister, Sarah Seward, wife of Enos. Mary appointed Enos guardian to her young daughter. She was now a widow with a toddler at age 21.

While living in Granville, Mary met and married Lemuel Gibbons with whom she had two children: Pamelia on June 5, 1781, and William Davidson Gibbons on August 27, 1783, whom she named after her first husband. no divorce record has been found, but when Enos and Sarah Seward [and family] returned to Pennsylvania in 1793, Mary probably went with them. There she met and married Valentine Santee. He died in 1808.

Mary's children by Lemuel both moved to Granville, Ohio,in about 1804/05. After Valentine's death in 1808, Mary followed as she was received by letter to the Baptist Church on August 1, 1819. However,that church was first organized in 1819 so it's possible Mary was in Granville before that.

Unfortunately, Mary was a pauper at her death and no stone has been recorded or found for her. We know from town records that members of the Baptist church in Granville, Ohio, cared for her during the last year of her life and that a local carpenter was paid to build a coffin for her. It is assumed that she was buried in the Old Burying
Ground upon her death. (by Gayle Van Dyke)
