Avis earned her RN degree from Augustana Hospital, School of Nursing, Chicago, IL in 1939. She married Charles L. "Buck" Owen on 18 Jun 1944 and moved to Kokomo, IN at that time. She bore 4 children: Judith Lynn "Judy", stillborn on 17 Jun 1945, Edward Sherman "Ed", b. 18 Jul 1946, d. 1 Aug 2008, Robert Frederick "Bob", b. 7 Aug 1948, and Suzan Kaye, b. 25 Mar 1955. She worked as a private duty nurse for several years, before becoming an industrial nurse at Delco Radio, (later, Delco Electronics) until she retired in 1977.
