Reverend Ferdinand Sievers
(May 18, 1816 - September 9, 1893

The founder and first pastor, Georg Ernst Christian Ferdinand Sievers was born in Lueneburg in the province of Hannover, Germany to Heinrich Sigismund Friedrich and Eleanor Lisette Florentine, nee von Borries. In 1822, his mother died and he along with six brothers were had to live with relatives. In 1833 he entered the University of Goettingen where he studied theology. He also attended the University of Berlin and University of Halle to continue his education. He was ordained into the ministry on April 27, 1847 and spent the rest of his life attending to the needs of the church community he founded in 1848.

He was ordained in Germany, but was not authorized to administer the sacraments. He came to America in 1847 with E.A. Brauer and joined the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. He traveled as a missionary throughout Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, founding the mission congregation in Frankenlust, MI, in 1848 as well as congregations in Bay City, MI and Minneapolis, MN.He was the chairman of the LCMS's Board of Missions 1850-1893. He was the LCMS's chronologist 1864-1866, 1872-1890.
