Martin received his education in the rural Walworth county area. He worked on farms and farmed there. He later worked as a bricklayer and was on the construction crew when the Lemmon post office was erected. In 1947 he moved to Aberdeen, and was a mechanic at Clinton Motors, and also assisted his brothers on their farms in the Lemmon area.

Martin died from a heart attack he experienced at the home of his brother, Mervel, where he was spending the Christmas holidays.
