George Blaney is a graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He attended from July 7 1813 to Mar 4 1815 and promoted in the Army to Brevet Second Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers, March 4 1818. Served as Assistant Engineer in the repairs of fortification in the Castine District, Main., and on Survey of the Narrows of the St. Lawrence River 1816-1817 as Aide-de-Camp to Brevet Brigadier General Swift. Made full Second Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers on October 31 1816. Served April 21 1817 to November 12 1818 as Assistant to the Chief Engineer at Washington D.C. and promoted to First Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers on November 12 1818. From 1818 to 1820 he served at the Military Academy as Adjutant from March 9 to 1820 to March 1 1821, as Assistant Engineer in the construction of the fortification at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Between 1821 and 1822 he served again as Adjutant at the Military Academy, from August 12 1822 to May 25 1825. Promoted to Captain, Corps of Engineers on July 1 1824. Served as the Superintending Engineer of the construction of the Fort Delaware, Pea Patch Island 1824-1825, Fort Caswell, NC 1825-1835, Improvements of the Cape Fear River, NC 1829-1835.
