Mary was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Nyssa to Sam and Nellie Smit. She was the second child of 12. Mary graduated from Nyssa High School in 1955. She married AL NICHOLS, Jan. 29, 1957, and moved to Ontario. In 1960, Al and Mary purchased a farm in New Acres and raised their family, one daughter and four sons. During this time on the farm, Mary raised chickens, calves, kittens, dogs and numerous other critters.

In addition to working the farm and raising her family, Mary went to work in the food service industry. Various jobs Mary held consisted of managing the Steer Inn in Nyssa and the Red Steer in Ontario. She moved on to work for the Ontario High School and Alameda Elementary School and retired after 15 years of service. After retiring, Mary worked at St. Peters School in the Foster Grandparent Program. She was lovingly referred to as "Grandma Mary."

This past September, she was diagnosed with cancer. With courage and optimism, Mary chose to undergo chemo and radiation treatments to help control the disease. Mary died peacefully and quietly at home with her family around her.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Al Nichols; her parents, Sam and Nell Smit; and brothers, Casey and Sam Smit.

She is survived by her children, Pam Compton (Brian), Randy Nichols (Beth), Steve Nichols (Betty), Scott Nichols (JoAnn) and David Nichols; her brothers and sisters, John and Norma Smit, Willie and Jack Sams, Nan Moss, Pete and Teri Smit, Paul and Arlene Smit, BJ Smit, Bob and Sue Smit and Monica and Tony Brunello; and seven grandchildren, Bryce Nichols, Logan Nichols, Christina Nichols, Jake Nichols, Rachel Kofoid, Sarah Reynolds and Tom Compton.

Mary will always be remembered for her loving spirit, huge generosity and her wonderful sense of humor. She brought love and sunshine to everyone she met.

The outpour of love, cards and phone calls from family and friends were truly a blessing and greatly appreciated.
