Harold L. Calkins, 88, of Allegan and formerly of Gladwin County, died Monday, Aug. 1, in the Allegan General Hospital. Born in Ovid on January 12, 1895, was postmaster in Highwood and operated a creamery and general store there. He then worked for the Department of Natural Resources for 20 years, retiring in 1955. Mr. Calkins moved to Allegan in 1939. He served in the Army during World War I and was a member and past commander of the Allegan VFW Post 3667.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred; 2 daughters, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Moore of Los Gatos, Calif. and Mrs. William (Jane) Nahikian of Allegan; 3 sons, Harold of El Paso, Texas, Donald of Wyandotte and Thomas of Stanford, Conn.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Rites were held in Allegan August 5. The Rev. Paul Ray officiated and burial was in the Battle Creek National Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 8-17/1983 Column - 4 Page - 2.
