BERNARD, Iowa -- Merlin J. Meyer, 80, of 16794 Prairie Creek Road, Bernard, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at home, surrounded by his family.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Holy Family Church, New Melleray, rural Peosta, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn and the Rev. Xavier Dieter, OCSO officiating and concelebrants. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service and rosary at 4 p.m.

He was born on April 15, 1929, in Dubuque County, St. Joseph Prairie, son of Henry and Catherine (Diesburg) Meyer. He married JoAnne Schiffer on Jan. 12, 1952, at St. Patrick's Church, in Dubuque.

Merlin farmed his whole life in the Bernard area. Along with farming, he had a great passion for horses, breeding, raising and training them.

He was a member of Holy Family Parish Community Life, Dubuque County Saddle Club, American Quarter Horse Association and former board member of Production Credit Association.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, JoAnne; five children, Dianne (Jeff) Reiter, of Cascade, Darlys (Jerry) Stoeffler, of East Dubuque, Ill., Donna Greene, of Ankeny, Duane (Laura) Meyer, of La Motte, and Dale (Lisa) Meyer, of Bernard; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Meyer, of Bernard; 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Marie (Willard) Noonan, of Bernard, Virginia Heiar, of Zwingle, and Doris (Gerald) Kutsch, of Waukesha, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis, on July 31, 2009; a brother, Laverne; a grandson, Darrell; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Heiar.
