JOHN AND MARTHA BROWN
This week it is with regret that we chronicle the death of husband and wife, their passing on was only one week apart. Such was the case with Mr. and Mrs. Brown, two of our elderly and respected citizens of this community.
John Christie Brown was born August 8, 1840, at Bloomington, Indiana. At the age of 16 he moved with his parents to Warren county (sic), Ill. On August 6, 1862, at the call of his country he enlisted in the Federal army and was assigned to 102 Ill. Volunteer infantry, serving three years and ten months. Much of this time was served with the reserve corps, whose duties were ardous (sic) and danger great. He was in many minor engagements and also a number of greater battles, among which was that of Resaca, Ga., which was fought on May 13 and 14, 1864 and was one of the battles fought by Sherman on his celebrated campaign through Georgia He was in most of the battles in which Sherman's army was engaged. After being mustered out and receiving an honorable discharge he engaged in farming near Keithburg (sic), Ill. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Rose Morey of Down (sic), Kansas, and Mrs. Armenda Cooper of Idaho to mourn his departure.
Martha B Stevens was born in Keokuk county (sic), Iowa, June 18, 1849 and later moved to Keithburg (sic), Ill. During her time in Chester she was very active in the Woman Missionary Society and was a great worker in the Women's Relief Corps, working in this society for almost 23 years. She passed this life one week later than her husband, July 20, 1924. She leaves three sisters Mrs. Elizabeth Regester, Chester, Nebr., Mrs. Mahaley Beasley, of Norton, Kansas, Sarah Hollenbeck, Mountaindale, Oregon, and two brothers, Wm. Stephens of Quitman, Mo., and Jack M. Stephens of Thomas, Oklahoma.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown were married at Keithburg (sic), Ill., January 3, 1867, and to them eight children were born, four of them preceeding (sic) them to the great beyond. From Keithburg (sic) the family moved to Iowa in 1869 and then to Liberty township, Republic county (sic), Kansas, in 1873 where they homesteaded, passing through all the trials of pioneer life and developing a good farm. Fourteen years ago they moved to Chester where they since resided.
This couple united with the Baptist church (sic) in 1883 and on coming to Chester they transferred their membership to the Church of Christ where they have been devoted members ever since.
Four children mourn their departure: Selden O. Brown, of Oskaloosa, Is.; Henry O. Brown, of Manhattan, Kansas; Mrs. Lon H. Presnall (sic) of Chester, Nebr.; and Mary O. Croop, of Toledo, Washington. Also 22 grandchildren, 10 great grand children and a host of friends mourn their loss.
Both funeral services were held in the Christian church (sic) conducted by their pastor, Rev. McCarthy, in Chester and the remains laid to rest in the Chester cemetery (sic). Mr. Brown's services were conducted on Thursday, July 17, and the services for Mrs. Brown were conducted Tuesday, July 22. - Chester Herald.
