DEATH OF MR. GEORGE EVANS.
The death of Mr. George Evans, an old and respected resident of Mendon township, occurred at an early hour on Thursday morning. Deceased was 72 years of age, and has been a resident of this county for many years. His death is mourned by a very large circle of relatives and friends.

- The Quincy Daily Whig, Saturday, November 28, 1885; page 3.

Mendon, Sept. 8 -- Fifty-eight years ago, the southeast corner of Eighth and Hampshire streets, where the Figgen drug store now stands, was occupied by a residence in which there lived a Boston, Massachusetts man named George Evans.

Quincy was then but a small city. The site of the Empire theater was occupied by a little shop. Mrs. Evans, when in need of something for a pie, in berry time would go to the present market place and gather blackberries from the wild bushes, which grew there in profusion.

James Evans of Mendon, the oldest child of George Evans and his wife, Mary A. Evans, was born in the little house across from the post office. In addition to that property, Mr. Evans owned property just across Eighth street, and on the opposite corner.

Over half a century ago, the elder Evans moved with his family to the south part of Mendon township, where he became a prosperous and respected citizen, and raised a family, all of the members of which married and settled in the vicinity of Mendon.
