He was a lawyer, first practising in Hamilton, Georgia. He came to Texas to fight with the Republic of Texas Army and was commissioned as a Colonel. He converted to Methodism in Liberty, Texas in 1840 and joined the circuit ministry there. He was transferred to Washington County, Texas and served there as a teacher, lawyer, and minister.
In Brenham, Texas he established the "Texas Christian Advocate and Brenham Advertiser" which later became the "United Methodist Reporter".
He moved to Coryell County, Texas in 1854 and he preached his first sermon in Gatesville soon after his arrival.
He established the First Methodist Church of Gatesville where he served as minister.
He was active in other public service in Gatesville where he was Secretary of the Masonic Lodge No. 197 and a member of the school board.
