Mark Goodwin "Goody" Clarke, a human relations executive in Baltimore for 16 years who earned a mayor's citation for his work as a volunteer tutor, died of heart failure Tuesday at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Baltimore. He was 82.

Mr. Clarke, who was born and raised in Chambersburg, Pa., came to Baltimore in 1965 to take a job as vice president for American Bank stationery. He also served in senior positions at E.F. Goetz co., Becton Dickinson and Provident Hospital before retiring in 1981.

Mr. Clarke went on to serve as a tutor for HARBEL Community Organization, which provides neighborhood, housing and substance-abuse services. He taught reading, math and life skills such as balancing a checkbook. For his volunteer work, he earned a citation from then-Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke in 1989. Mr. Clarke served as a tutor until 2004.

Mr. Clarke grew up with an affinity for music and learned to play the viola. He played in the music program at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown and in ensembles for the Chambersburg community Theatre. He also worked for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on a freelance basis.

A neck accident in his home a few years ago jeopardized his ability to play the viola, said his son, Christopher Clarke of Hendersonville, Tenn. but Mr. Clarke was determined to keep playing.

If I can't swing a fiddle...I will switch to cello, "Christopher Clarke remembered his father saying.

After gradating from Chambersburg High School Class of 1943, Mr. Clarke attended Baylor University and Lebanon Valley College. He later worked for the Chambersburg Broadcasting Co. and the Chambersburg Engineering Co.

Mr. Clarke served in the 4th Infantry Division, 89th Regiment in Europe from August 1944 through the spring of 1945, and received a Purple Heart. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Clarke is survived by two daughters, Carol Clarke of Orange, Mass., and Rebecca Clarke of Hong Kong; a brother , Samuel C. Clarke of Chambersburg; and a granddaughter. Two marriages ended in divorce.
